Zinc Oxide

Zinc oxide, a compound used in many materials and products, is most widely known as a highly effective sunblock with an opaque white color. Most sunscreen products are absorbed into the skin and act chemically to disperse the sun’s harmful rays within the skin. Often, they can be irritating and cause breakouts. Zinc oxide sits on the skin’s surface to provide a physical barrier as it reflects the sun’s rays away from the skin. This means it is a true sunblock on the skin’s surface, it is non-comedogenic and it will not irritate the skin. Zinc Oxide combats photoaging and skin cancer by blocking both UVA and UVB rays. In recent years, technology has allowed for the manufacture of small zinc oxide particles that still reflect light from the skin’s surface while greatly minimizing the opaque, white color.
