Acne is the bane of many a teen’s existence – and unfortunately it doesn’t necessarily stop once you age out of your teen years. Acne can – and does – affect adults too, even those who were never prone to breakouts in their younger years.

“No one knows the exact cause of acne, but we do know that heredity plays a big role in two important factors that cause acne: our hormone activity and the oiliness of our skin,” says plastic surgeon James Beckman, MD, Theraderm’s CEO and Founder.

And of late, the daily use of masks which help prevent the spread of COVID-19 seems to be causing an epidemic of “maskne” – skin irritation or breakouts underneath the face coverings.

If you are breaking out, the first thing to do is try a salicylic acid cleanser such as Reversion Clarifying Cleanser, Dr. Beckman says. It’s oil-free and shown to cleanse pores of dirt, oil and bacteria without drying the skin. “The salicylic acid formulation helps to fight acne blemishes at the source and prevent new blemishes from forming, while promoting natural cell turnover,” Dr. Beckman says. “Green tea leaf extract works to calm and soothe inflamed, acne-prone skin.”

It’s effective for all skin types and will reduce pimple size and redness overnight when placed as a spot treatment on existing blemishes, he adds. The Reversion Clear Skin System is a simple 3-step system that anyone can use and is highly effective in the treatment of mild to moderate acne. In addition to the Cleanser, the system includes a toner that exfoliates dead skin cells, prevents clogged pores and reduces excess oil and shine. The Reversion Spot Treatment PM can visibly reduce pimples overnight.

It’s also a good idea to check in with your dermatologist. Acne can look like other skin diseases, including rosacea, Dr. Beckman says. “Your skincare professional will be able to tell you what is causing your blemishes,” he says. “In addition to an upgraded home skin care regimen, your doctor may suggest oral antibiotics, which are usually taken for a short period of time to reduce the bacteria that contribute to acne and reduce the inflammation and redness; or birth control pills, as these may help women whose acne tends to mimic the ebb and flow of hormones during their menstrual cycle.”
