If you are anything like us, you have probably turned to the internet to find a solution to a skin care issue that has popped up. Knowledge is power, after all. But sometimes that knowledge that is available at your fingertips is simply false. We are here to help you separate myths that are true from the ones that are fiction.

9 Skin Care Myths That Just Aren’t True:

1. You can shrink your pores.
Sorry, ladies Pore size is determined mostly by genetics which means they don’t open, close, get larger or (darn it!) smaller. If they are clogged they do appear larger so keeping them clear can help them appear smaller. Theraderm's Fruit Acid Exfoliant can help keeps pores clear.

2. Botox can prevent wrinkles from forming.
While it certainly can reduce your chances of developing future lines, injecting your face prior to the formation of wrinkles could cause a disfigured appearance. Should you decide you need a little assistance, hold off until the wrinkles really show. But while you wait, use your sunscreen as a preventive measure.

3. Drinking lots of water will give you better skin.
We’ve all heard the celebs say the get their beautiful skin simply by drinking water. Water won’t give you perfect skin but if you are very dehydrated, it will help plump the skin back up to its healthy original form.

4. You can sweat your way to better skin.
This is false, in fact, breaking a sweat and then not washing your face, can lead to breakouts. Sweat harbors bacteria that is not good for your skin.

5. Exfoliation should be painful.
Please do not believe this awful myth. It’s the exact opposite. Using harsh abrasives will damage and thin skin over time. Use one like Theraderm’s NuPeel Natural Enzyme Peeling Gel that exfoliates while adding much needed nutrients to skin.

6. Don’t worry about using anti-aging products until you are showing signs of aging.
We are pretty sure the person that started this myth was 16 years old. If you want beautiful skin when you are older, start taking care of it as soon as possible. Theraderm’s Skin Renewal System is perfect for daily maintenance, but they also have a full line of targeted, anti-aging products.

7. Household products can be used in place of skin care.
Wow. Really? Household products were made for specific household chores, not the most delicate skin on your body!

8. Hand sanitizer can be used to tame oily skin.
The active ingredient in hand sanitizers is alcohol and not suitable for facial skin. If you have oily skin, try Theraderm’s Clear Skin System instead.

9. Chocolate can cause acne.
Chocolate isn't the only culprit. It's actually the sugar in the chocoalate that causes the problems. Which, by the way, also causes skin to age prematurely through a process called “glycation.”
