I’m always trying to find ways to improve the quality of my skin from the inside out. I’m convinced that your grandmother was right: you are what you eat, garbage in-garbage-out, and all that jazz.
And isn’t it nice when something that is good for you is yummy too?
Salmon is one of those nutritious foods that are extremely beneficial in a myriad of ways — not the least of which is your skin health. Why? Salmon contains a high amount of omega-3 fatty acids, and it’s extremely important to make sure that you’re getting enough omega-3s in your diet because our bodies don’t produce them on their own.
Here are some things eating salmon regularly can do for your skin:
- lessen the occurrence of clogged pores
- reduce inflammation that leads to skin damage
- help combat dry skin and skin conditions such as eczema
- improve your skin’s elasticity
- diminish fine lines and wrinkles
I don’t know about you, but sign me up!
And best of all, salmon is delicious. Grill it, broil it, smoke it, make it into salmon cakes or salmon spread… the possibilities are limitless.
I get wild salmon when I can afford it. Farm raised salmon are higher in mercury and lower in flavor and nutritional value than wild salmon. Farm raised salmon are given antibiotics because of their proneness to disease due to their unnatural diets. Oh, and they are usually given food coloring so they look like salmon are supposed to look.
So, wild salmon it is!
Because wild salmon can get expensive, I often buy boneless canned wild Alaskan salmon at Trader Joe’s and make these salmon cakes that my family loves.
Sometimes I marinate it Asian style and grill it.
And don’t forget about smoked salmon with cream cheese and crackers for a tasty, easy appetizer!
