People ask me this question all the time:  ”Is is really necessary to spend more for quality skin care?”   Unfortunately, the answer is yes AND no.  Confused?  Hopefully, you won’t be after reading this post as you discover there are really great reasons to spend more on quality skin care.  Of course, there are also really great reasons to NOT spend additional hard earned dollars……

Below is a short list of the most common reason for a higher price tag:

  1. Expensive packaging
  2. Large marketing and advertising budget
  3. Large budget for research and development
  4. Use of expensive product ingredients

I don’t mind paying a little more for a product that has been scientifically created with high quality ingredients that WORK!     Ingredients you should be looking for are alpha hydroxy acids, peptides, hyaluronic acid and stable antioxidants.  When you check the ingredients, make sure the active ones are listed within the first half of the list – any lower and they probably aren’t in a concentration high enough to do much good!  So if the products are priced higher due to reasons numbered 3 and 4 – GO FOR IT!

On the other hand,  buying products simply because they are “brand name” or because they come in nice packaging is big a waste of money.   The value of the actual product matters most, not the appearance of the bottle it comes in or the catchiness of its advertisements.   Before you shell out $200 for a new night cream, do some research to determine why the product is so expensive. Is it because it has a new patent-pending ingredient? Is the formulation and finish worth the extra money?  Are you simply paying for a nice jar you are soon to be throwing away or WORSE – paying the salary of some “celebrity of the moment” ?   Do you really think J-Biebs uses Pro-Active? Probably not!

As for what skin care products you should skimp and splurge on, I don’t skimp on ANYTHING!  From my cleanser that doubles as my eye make-up remover (yes – it is THAT gentle!) to my peptide repair creme – I just do not skimp on my face.  I mean – its my FACE and the first thing people see when they meet me, but most importantly – they first thing I see everyday!  I view my daily skin care routine as an investment in ME.   You wouldn’t hire some cheap, fly-by-night guy to manage your portfolio of investments - would you?   So do your research – spend the extra money where you feel you need it most – you won’t be sorry!

Hope this helps!  I want to know – what products do you splurge on and where do you try to save and why?
