Between confusing, overstated infomercials and remedies straight from Aunt Fran, (you know she told you toothpaste doubles as a spot treatment), battling breakouts can be a head-scratching experience. You eventually get to the point where you’ll try anything and everything just to see if it works.

Before you go to those extremes -- let us save you a little angst.

3 Acne Remedies That Will Actually Make Your Skin Worse:

1. Rubbing Alcohol

Some people with oily skin swear by rubbing alcohol to get rid of shine. While it does indeed remove surface oils and dead skin cells, it's too harsh, drying, and irritating to be used regularly. Considering that it can lead to inflammation and even more redness -- it's best to keep the rubbing alcohol far, far away from your face. Plus, when your skin gets super dry, it tries to hydrate itself triggering additional oil production making your problem worse.

2. Harsh Soaps

When our faces are breaking out we are so tempted to use the old bar of deodorant soap in an effort to tone down the eruptions. But, much alcohol, the harsh soap will strip the surface oils but that’s about it.

3. Multiple Products

Using several different products from several different lines could potentially cause World War III to break out on your face -- especially if you aren’t paying close attention to the active ingredients in each product. Active ingredients are called active for a reason and mixing 2, 3 or even different ones together can cause serious issues. Stick with one brand of products that were specifically designed to work together.
