A Look at Skin Care Product Ingredients

When looking at skin care products, it can be very easy to get lost in the ingredient list. We know from articles we read and things we hear that applying a large amount of synthetic ingredients to our skin might be more harmful than helpful. This is why ingredient lists that contain chemicals we’ve never heard of may cause us to question whether or not the product is safe for use on our skin.

At Therapon Skin Health, we utilize many natural ingredients in our products. However, there are some ingredients that must be added to the product formulas to help with everything from shelf-life to the overall effectiveness of the product. While some of these ingredients may seem to provide a disadvantage for skin, they are all there for a purpose. Every ingredient included in a Theraderm Clinical Skin Care product fits our proven rationale for true restoration of skin in a way that meets the even more stringent EU regulations for product registrations.

When one looks at the Skin Renewal System, it is important to remember that the four products work synergistically to restore every aspect of skin damage. This means that while one product may have an ingredient that seems to have a negative effect, other steps in the system will restore the property of skin that may have been altered. For example:

  1. Cleansing Wash thoroughly removes dirt, grime, excess oils and skin cell debris. It is a gentle, yet powerful, surfactant designed to loosen the static electricity-like bonding between dirt and foreign particles and the skin surface. While powerful in its ability to cleanse skin, certain ingredients may remove some beneficial lipids for the skin’s moisture barrier system. This is of no concern though because ingredients in other steps will restore the lipid barrier system.
  2. Theraderm Fruit Acid Exfoliant is scientifically designed with an ingredient concentration and pH value that facilitates the regulation (intracellular action) of energy storage and release from glucose metabolism. The SD alcohol included in the formula may be a deterrent for some, but the ingredient is denatured ethanol of high concentration to dissolve and loosen waxy deposits and heavy oils. This allows the skin to be thoroughly cleansed of pore-clogging material, but can be drying. However, the hydration of skin will be replaced and restored in the moisturizing product step.
  3. Theraderm OPC Reparative Serum is designed with multiple powerful ingredients to scavenge harmful Free-Radicals. These ingredients include oligomeric proanthocyanidins, the most powerful scavenger known and from natural source Alpha lipoic acid that penetrates both oil and water based systems and vitamin E. Other ingredients included in OPC Reparative Serum are necessary to prevent microbial growth and to ensure long shelf life of nearly all products. Diazolidinyl urea, lodopropynyl butylcarbamate are the least possible to cause harshness in a product and are of the few allowed by the EU for use in cosmetic grade products for topical use.
  4. Peptide Hydrator Moisturizer is one of three choices for a facial moisturizer. This hydrator has active peptides for increasing collagen production and hyaluronic acid to hydrate skin cells. C 13-14 Isoparaffin may be an ingredient that causes concern because of the pore-clogging potential of any petroleum-sourced emollient. Keep in mind that the Theraderm system includes thorough cleansing twice daily. This sequence and the thorough cleansing action of the Cleansing wash completely removes any potential waxy or pore clogging potential oils. Each day the cycle recurs and the skin remains balanced and healthy.
