For many of us, the way our skin looks in the morning is a clear indication of what kind of day we’re going to have. We get out of bed, head over to the mirror, and check ourselves out. What’s going on today? A clear, calm complexion? A bevy of breakouts? New fine lines and wrinkles? Or hey, look at that! Is that a new patch of dark spots?

To help you in your quest for brighter horizons complexion-wise, we Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, Dr. James Beckman, what it takes to get gorgeous skin. He gave us this straightforward, thorough, easy-to-follow, bottom-line guide for every age.

Your No-Fail Plan: In your 20's

Use gentle products, and focus on damage prevention. "You don't need anti-aging creams or microdermabrasion in your 20's," says Dr. James Beckman, Founder and CEO, Theraderm Clinical Skin Care.

Cleanser: If you have normal skin, you really only to wash your face once daily before you go to bed. Use a mild cleanser -- either a gel, if your skin is oily, or a milky one, if it's dry. We like Theraderm Cleansing Wash. It’s soap-free formula still foams to get skin squeaky clean, but it won’t dry your skin like a soap.

Moisturizer: Choose a moisturizer that suits your skin type. And remember - less is more!

Sunscreen: Daily. As in every single day even in winter, even if it’s cloudy! Choose a formula that is oil-free with broad-spectrum coverage like Platinum Protection Facial Sunscreen by Theraderm.

Treatments: Lactic acid peels and Dermaplaning are great ways to keep skin lightly hydrated and glowing. There is little to no downtime to slow down your pace but the results are beautiful!

Your No-Fail Plan: In your 30's

Even if you've taken good care of your skin, you'll probably start noticing fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the eyes and mouth as the signs of photo-aging begin to present themselves.

Cleanser: Now is the time to start washing your face morning and night. Theraderm Cleansing Wash still works as it is effective for all skin types and ages.

Moisturizer: Start thinking in terms of “wardrobe” when considering a moisturizer. You need hydration morning and night now - but probably not the same level of moisture. Your daytime cream should be lighter while your nighttime cream is a little heavier. This also holds true for the seasons. You can get away with a lighter cream during the hot, humid months of summer and something heavier in the drier months. Theraderm has three different moisturizers to suit your needs: Gentle Facial Moisturizer for sensitive or problematic skin, Enriched Facial Moisturizer for dry or mature skin and Peptide Hydrator for normal to combination skin.

Different areas of your face have different needs, so now is the time to start wearing an eye cream daily. For dark circles, use one with hydroquinone, vitamin C, or botanicals that brighten, like kojic acid, soy, or licorice; for puffiness, look for one containing caffeine; for extra moisturization, use one with hyaluronic acid. Theraderm Peptide Repair Eye Creme does all of those things!

Exfoliation: As you head into your third decade cellular turn over begins to slow down which means your skin is going to need a little help to maintain its healthy glow. AHA toners will do the trick! We like Theraderm Fruit Acid Exfoliant with 10% lactic acid to gently exfoliate your face without harsh abrasives.

Antioxidants: Battling free radicals is going to be a game changer for your skin. Not only should you be consuming them on a daily basis, but adding them to your skin care routine is important. OPC Reparative Serum hydrates skin while helping to repair and prevent sun damage. A definite win-win!

Treatments: Jessner’s Peels and microneedling are great ways to reduce those first signs of aging that hit during this decade. You should also consider preventive treatments such as Botox.

Your No-Fail Plan: In Your 40’s

Cleanser: Stick with washing your face day and night and as we mentioned above - Theraderm Cleansing Wash is perfect for all ages. It is effective at removing oils and cellular debris from the skin, but still gentle enough to use as an eye makeup remover!

Moisturizer: Use a moisturizer suited to skin type and add an anti-aging cream with collagen-stimulating peptides, Eternox Peptide Creme.

Nighttime treatment: This is a good time to continue with exfoliation and following up with a skin brightener such as Enlighten Skin Brightener. This will help combat at dull complexion.

Treatments: This is when you bring out the big guns! Botox, fillers and more aggressive chemical peels such as TCA will really help turn back the years.

Your No-Fail Plan: In your 50's and beyond

Don't even think of retiring from the skincare game. It's never too late to prevent sun damage and to stop the progression of damage you may already have. Cell turnover is slow; the most significant change you'll notice in your complexion is dryness and loss of elasticity. Expression lines no longer disappear after you stop smiling or squinting; pores are more visible, especially on the nose and cheeks. You're likely to have developed spider veins and hyperpigmentation (age spots), and precancerous spots from sun damage.

Once you hit your 60's and 70's, basically all the issues that arose in your 50's become more extreme. Aren't you glad you're flooded with postmenopausal zest? This simply means you’ve got to make an effort to keep up a good skin care routine along with a healthy diet and lots of water to help hydrate skin from the inside out. And don’t forget your sunscreen! Continue with the above treatments while considering adding laser therapy to help with skin laxity.

Aging is inevitable, but that doesn't mean we can't go down swinging!
